Principal’s Message
Tēnā koutou katoa
Thanks to our parents who recently attended teacher/parent conferences. If you were unable to come, please make an appointment time with your child’s class teacher, as it is important to discuss their progress and achievement and goal set.
Emergency Training
As part of keeping our school safe we need to be able to respond safely and quickly to a range of emergency situations. The school and community did a great job in managing the fire in Rooms 7 & 8 last year. However, we wish to continually improve our emergency response. To this end, we are working alongside an independent company, Harrison Tew®, who specialises in emergency management planning for schools, and whose procedures have been successfully implemented in hundreds of schools throughout New Zealand.
As part of maintaining the emergency procedures in our school, specialised training is being conducted with our senior leadership and staff by Harrison Tew®. This week (Thursday) the students will also receive information on how to respond in an emergency directed at their respective age groups from Harrison Tew®.
We will then be conducting a lockdown exercise (Friday) under the guidance and support of Harrison Tew®. During the exercise you will receive a notification from the school, so it is important that your emergency contact details are up to date and correct. The notification will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website.
In a genuine incident, should you become aware of a lockdown or evacuation at the school, can I please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence or contact may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage a situation. We thank you for your support.
Waitangi Trip
Last week three teachers and ten lucky students visited Waitangi, learning about New Zealand’s history and significant historical sites. They had a great time and returned late Saturday. Thanks Sandra Meyer, Brendan Jones and Mandy Kearney.

Measles
Not enough New Zealanders are immunised against measles, which means there is a very high risk of an outbreak.
The best protection against measles is two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine – free for all young people aged 18 and under in New Zealand and all adults over the age of 18 who are eligible for free New Zealand healthcare.
The first symptoms of measles are fever, cough, runny nose and sore red eyes, followed by a red or dark pink rash typically starting on the face or behind the ears three days after the first symptoms before moving down the body. If you observe these symptoms, encourage parents and/or caregivers to contact their healthcare provider or Healthline on 0800 611 116 immediately.

Dental Service
Please be aware that district health board dental services use school rolls to cross-check their own records so they can pick up children who might not be enrolled or whose details are out of date. It is standard practice for all New Zealand schools to share this type of information with the national dental service.
