Children and their learning at the heart of all we do.

Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Whānau

Thank you for responding so well to my earlier request that students arrive at school on time. There is a noticeable improvement. Arriving at school at 8:30 am gives your children a good start to the day, and it is easier to get children to bed early on these dark evenings. A good night’s sleep helps children to stay well, get up willingly in the morning, and enjoy their day at school.

PTN Executive

Congratulations to Anna Coates (Chair), Holly Yu (Vice Chair), Jack Chng (Treasurer), and Jo Catty (Secretary). I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jay Chen for his considerable contribution to the PTN. Jay, we very much appreciate all that you have done for the school.

After School Use of Toilets

It has come to our attention that parents are entering student toilets with their children after school. For child safety reasons, it is school policy that adults do not enter student toilets at any time, even when accompanying a child.

Please note that our bathroom facilities are not available for after-hours use.

Playgrounds

A reminder to parents whose children are using our playgrounds before and after school that these can be slippery when wet and should not be used when it has been raining

Digital Citizenship

At Cockle Bay School we are a digitally savvy school. We provided a chrome book to every student in Year 4, 5 and 6 to use at school and junior classes have access to iPads. We have good routines in place to keep our students safe online.

Please can you take 5 minutes to carefully read through the student digital agreement with your child/ children so they are aware of their responsibilities online. Please complete the parent permission Google form confirming that you agree to the terms of the agreement. The agreement is for Term 3 2024 – Term 2 2025.

Please complete both the agreement and permission form.

Jammie Army

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our recent pyjama collection. A total of 330 pairs were donated from the school. A letter from the Middlemore Foundation is attached below.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

Throughout Term 2, the overall focus of the PB4L team was a shared approach. Every second week, teams and classes focus on issues and behaviours that need reteaching.

During alternate weeks, the focus will include caring for our school environment, moving around our school in a considerate manner, respecting all property, and continuous improvement on our ‘Wheel of Choice’ responses.  Please take the opportunity to ask your child to explain the Wheel of Choice and how this impacts our school community.

Our Mahi Pai competition is heating up and our learners are working hard to earn these rewards for their year groups. Please encourage your child to bring any tokens they may have taken home back to school, and place them in the containers before lunchtime on Fridays.

Cockle Bay Learner Profile

Our Cockle Bay School values are our 4Cs.  These are: Continuous Improvement, Collaboration, Caring and Celebration.

We also have a Learner Profile which summarises the curriculum.

You may have seen visuals for these in the office and in classrooms around the school.

Our Learner Profile includes the capabilities that we hope our students demonstrate across all areas of their learning.

The four capabilities are for learners to be:

  • Culturally and Socially Connected
  • Awareness of Self and Others
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Creative and Critical Thinker

Students’ mid term reports include a Learner Profile Comment.

To help our parents, whānau and wider community become more familiar with our Learner Profile, each letter will outline one of the capabilities, with examples of how students can demonstrate them.

This week we are focusing on:

Culturally and Socially Connected

Examples of what students may be doing from Year 0-3

  • recognise and talk about the different cultures represented in their class
  • talk about things that make them who they are
  • talk kindly to others.
  • treat their environment respectfully and explain why it is important

Examples of what students may be doing from Year 4-6

  • be confident to talk about and share their culture with other people
  • be proud of their culture
  • want other people to know more about their culture
  • show empathy and respect for other cultures
