Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Whānau
PB4L
We are proud to be a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school. This allows us to develop and embrace a school-wide focus on promoting positive behaviour and creating inclusive learning environments. PB4L is built on the principles that we need to teach, reinforce and reward the behaviours we want to see, while managing inappropriate behaviour in consistent ways that help children own it, fix it and learn from it.
Our behaviour matrix is based on our 4C’s (Caring, Collaboration, Celebration and Continuous improvement).
A restorative approach to inappropriate behaviour focuses on meeting the needs of those involved, rather than on blame and punishment. Through collaboration and problem-solving students learn to take responsibility for the outcomes of their behaviour and impact on others.
Our current focus is reinforcing the school-wide values of the 4Cs. We teach these values to ensure that children feel a sense of control (agency) over their actions, their impact on the environment around them, and their wellbeing. Teachers and students have been working together to unpack what this looks like as an individual, a class, and a school. As part of teaching the 4Cs, students discuss what this looks like, sounds like and feels like to themselves, others, and the environment. You might like to use this as a discussion point in your family as to how they can show these values at home:
Caring: e.g. feed the animals, clean your room
Collaboration: e.g. playing a family game that involves sharing and taking turns
Celebration: e.g. talk about their proudest moment of the day
Continuous Improvement: e.g. set a family goal
Kind regards
Dorothy Bigwood
